PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy)

What is PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy)?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a live coaching therapy for children ages 2-7 and their caregivers to improve disruptive behaviors and strengthen their relationship. It involves a therapist observing the parent and child through a one-way mirror and providing real-time coaching through an earpiece. The therapy has two main phases: Child-Directed Interaction (CDI), which focuses on praise and positive reinforcement to improve the relationship, and Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI), which teaches caregivers consistent discipline and limit-setting skills.

How Does it Work?

Live Coaching

A therapist observes the parent-child play session and guides the parent through an earpiece, providing real-time feedback.

Session Structure

Sessions are typically one hour long, held weekly for about 12–20 weeks.

Homework

Parents are given practice homework to apply skills at home and in community settings.

Two Phases

Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)

Caregivers learn to use specific skills to engage with their children, like using praise and attention to encourage positive behaviors.

Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI)

Caregivers learn to use effective commands and discipline procedures to manage challenging behaviors more directly.

Goals and benefits of PCIT

Effective for Various Populations

PCIT has been shown to be effective across different cultures, languages, and settings, including families dealing with trauma or developmental disorders.

What to Expect

Improved skills

You will learn specific, evidence-based skills for both positive interaction and effective limit-setting.

Direct Guidance

Live coaching allows you to master skills by applying them with immediate feedback.

Lasting Results

The goal is to create sustained improvement so that families can continue to use the skills long after the therapy ends.
