What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a type of counseling or psychotherapy that utilizes play as a method for communication and expression, particularly suited to children.

Play therapy as an evidence-based therapeutic approach used to help young children, typically between the ages of 3 and 11, process their emotions and experiences. Counselors can create a secure and nurturing environment for children to express themselves by utilizing play, the natural language of childhood.

How Does Play Therapy Work?

During sessions, children participate in various forms of play, including imaginative play, arts and crafts, storytelling, and games. These activities can facilitate self-expression appropriate for their age and developmental stage. Therapists observe these interactions and use emerging themes to better understand and address underlying concerns.

The overall objective is to support the child in processing emotions, developing problem-solving abilities, learning emotional regulation, and building coping strategies.
